For this week of Tortoise tricksters, I have some African children's books to share... and then tomorrow, I'll shift over to tales of the tricskter tortoise from Native American storytellers.
The first two books are by one of my favorite children's authors, the Maasai storyteller Tololwa Mollel (now based in Canada):
Because we read these books for Anansi Book Club, you can find out lots more about both of these books in these earlier posts: The King and the Tortoise and The Flying Tortoise.
The third story comes from a series of books by Mwenye Hadithi, the pen name of Nairobi-born author Bruce Hobson: The Tricky Tortoise.
This book retells a traditional African folktale about the tortoise in a jumping contest, and the tortoise wins the contest by using a variation on the same trick that allows the tortoise to win races too: he uses a double!
You can also find the rest of Hobson's book series at the Archive too: books by Mwenye Hadithi.
So, those are just a few more Tortoise stories from Africa to enjoy, and tomorrow I'll share some Native American stories about the trickster Tortoise!
