Tricksters: Yoruba Legends

Here is some more Ijapa the Tortoise, this time from two books published in 1929 by a British woman who was married to a Yoruba man from Nigeria. She published one book of stories under her married name, M. I. Ogumefu. The book is Yoruba Legends, and it is dedicated to her husband who died in 1927, just 25 years old. There are 40 stories in the book, including 9 stories about the trickster Tortoise.

She published the second book under her maiden name, Margaret Baumann: Ajapa the Tortoise. A Book of Nigerian Fairy Tales.

This book contains an additional 30 stories with color illustrations by G. R. Day. Here is Tortoise in Lion's den:

Baumann went on to become a prolific writer of romance novels, which she published under a pen name: she Marguerite Lees. The Internet Archive has a few of those books too: books by Marguerite Lees.

Meanwhile, I'll be back tomorrow with more Tortoise stories!
