Public Domain Art: Lang's Other Fairy Books

Lang published 25 different African stories in his Fairy Book series, with illustrations by Henry Justice Ford; more about Ford. This is the last of my series of posts with artwork from the African stories in his books.

In the Pink Fairy Book, published in 1897, there are two different African folktales: The Jackal, the Dove, and the Panther, and The Little Hare, both of which have illustrations. These are both from Jacottet's Sotho legends.

In the Crimson Fairy Book, published in 1900, there are two different African folktales. There are no illustrations for The Death of Abu Nowas and His Wife, but Motikatika is illustrated; it is from Junod's Baronga stories.

In the Brown Fairy Book, published in 1904, there is one African folktale: The Sacred Milk of Koumongoe, and it is illustrated. Another Sotho legend from Jacottet.

In the Olive Fairy Book, published in 1907, there is one African folktale: Samba the Cowardand it is illustrated. The story comes from Contes Soudainais by C. Monteil.

See this Flickr album for larger file sizes. The images below have been resized to fit this blog; I have linked the titles of the stories below to where you can read them in the book.
