Tricksters. Rabbit Wishes

After a week of Coyote stories, I thought it would be fun to do a week of Rabbit stories, starting with this wonderful Afro-Cuban legend retold by Linda Shute: Rabbit Wishes.

The book is in English but with Spanish names for the characters and other Spanish words interwoven throughout, and also in a glossary at the start of the book. There are detailed, very helpful notes in the back of the book, including information about Rabbit's pito de calabaza, his pumpkin whistle.

The story is the famous "trickster seeks endowments" legend that is well-known in African and Diaspora storytelling traditions. In this case, Rabbit must face Eagle, Snake, and Lion on his quest:

The story has a great twist at the end too! If you want to learn about the Tio Conejo tradition, this book is a perfect place to start!
