Tricksters. Pan Twardowski

For this next post in the trickster Devil stories this week, I'm excited to share the story of the Polish nobleman Twardowski who made a legendary bargain with the Devil. Twardowski thinks he can outwit the Devil, but the Devil gets the better of him... although in the end Twardowski finds one last loophole to make his escape.

Twardowski's story is very famous throughout Poland, and at the Internet Archive I found two books in English about his adventures. This first book has the text in three languages: Polish, English, and German! Pan Twardowski ~ Mister Twardowski ~ Herr Twardowski by Katarzyna  Małkowska.

The text appears in all three languages together on the page as you can see in this screenshot (click on the image for a larger view).

The other book is in English: The Magician of Cracow by Krystyna Turska.

One of my favorite details about the legend is the spider who accompanies Pan Twardowski to the moon and whom he sends down occasionally to gather news from the city of Cracow, as you can see here (click on the image for a larger view).

And if you're curious to learn more, there's an article about Sir Twardowski at Wikipedia too! Meanwhile, I'll be back tomorrow with more of the Devil's tricks.
