African Folktales at Internet Archive: When Hippo Was Hairy

Welcome to Week 19, everybody! I decided to focus this week on stories from southern Africa, because that is an excuse to write about one of my favorite authors: Nick Greaves and his book When Hippo Was Hairy and Other Tales from Africa, which is just a click away at Internet Archive:

Nick Greaves is based in South Africa, so most of the stories here are from southern Africa, with a few stories from eastern and central Africa; there are 36 stories in the book with a focus on animals (so you know I like that!).

As always, Greaves does a great job with geographical and ecological context, along with cultural context; the book opens with an overview of the African continent:

He then provides information specific to each animal, like here for the warthog:

One of the animals you will meet, perhaps for the first time, is the rock dassie of southern Africa, a very important figure in southern African animal mythology and folklore:

The illustrations are by Rod Clement, and they include both black-and-white drawings, and also full color spreads as you can see here in the cheetah pages:

There are also some single page color illustrations like this wonderful ostrich:

I've written about Nick Greaves before, and I can highly recommend these other books of his available at Internet Archive which use the same basic approach as this book: great folktales, along with lots of information about the animals too:

The great people at Internet Archive invited me to give them a "wish list" of other books of African folktales that they can try to add to the collection, so hopefully I will have some more books by Greaves to share in the future! Meanwhile, you've got three of his books you can enjoy now, just a click away.
