African Diaspora at Internet Archive: Brer Tiger and the Big Wind

Since this is turning into a week of Brer Rabbit, I wanted to share this lovely book, based on one of my favorite trickster folktale motifs: "Tie me up, please!" The story comes from the folklorist William J. Faulkner, with art by Roberta Wilson: Brer Tiger and the Big Wind.

Here's Brer Rabbit tying Tiger to the tree:

And if you're curious about Faulkner, you can find his book of stories at the Archive also: The Days When the Animals Talked: Black American Folktales and How They Came to Be.

The illustrations are by Tony Howell; he doesn't include an illustration for the "big wind" story, but here's Brer Rabbit having tricked Wolf into becoming his riding horse (another widespread trickster motif both in the United States and in African folktales):

So, enjoy the story of Rabbit and Tiger and... if you want more, Faulkner's book awaits you too!
